Seeing America: 20th & 21st Century, the new modern and contemporary galleries add expanded interpretation and emphasis on interdisciplinary themes and the breadth of the American experience.

7,500ft2 of permanent gallery space, public space and accessible initiatives for multiple stairwells, elevators and entrances enliven the largest single thematic footprint dedicated to one collection. A full schematic plan and gut renovation created a beautiful, contemporary and open homage to the original Michael Graves plan with an emphasis on visitor navigation.

In addition to the renovations, bilingual wall labels in English and Spanish throughout help visitors engage with stories, reactions and content written by community influencers like Tracey Norman and Layqa Nuna Yawar. Additional seating areas, media elements and directional signage add personal touches to the galleries.

Fall, 2017 - March 2019

Over the course of two or more years, I met with the curator of the American Art collection to strategize and develop plans to maximize the exhibition spaces for the modern and contemporary art collections. These photos show the process from start to finish.
