Madeleine in New York: The Art of Ludwig Bemelmans, the exhibition celebrated the 75th anniversary of the beloved children’s book Madeleine, the narrative of the all-time favorite high-spirited little girl and Bemelmans self-proclaimed alter-ego. Even though most of Madeleine’s adventures take place in Europe, the character herself was written inside an old bar near Gramercy park. Bemelmans started cartooning after moving permanently to the U.S in 1915, giving birth to Madeleine. The exhibition included 90 original artworks as well as the original Madeleine manuscript. Bemelmans’s witty sense of humor and playful nature served as an inspiration to create a space meant to inspire and educate the audience. Thanks to its sophisticated but child-friendly design, the exhibition proved to be a success amongst people from all ages, amused by the exciting features such as sounds from Madeleine’s dog ‘Genevieve and daily readings for families.
